Issue with shrinking drive

$

0

I am on vmware 6.7 and Windows 2012 R2.

Made mistake in my lab environment trying to shrink Drive C: from 80GB to 78GB.

Instead of shrinking the 80GB drive I extended the wrong drive VIPDEV1 which was 1gb and now it is 18GB.

I tried to shrink it back to 12GB which it did but would not go any smaller.

Since that was done now VM will not boot. I get Module MonitorLoop power on failed.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I can restore from back up but I want to learn from mistakes and see if this could be fixed.

If possible please provide link on how to properly shrink the volume. Thanks.

Best Practice: Multiple partitions on a single vmdk or one partition per vmdk

Hello everyone-

I would like to get you your opinions on the best practice for the File Server vmdk setup.

C drive partition would allocated for the OS, while E, F ... partitions for Data storage.

setup 1:

vmdk1 = thick provisioned disk hosting C drive partition

vmdk2 = thick provisioned disk hosting E, F..... partitions

Setup 2

vmdk1 = thick provisioned disk hosting C partition

vmdk2 = thick provisioned disk hosting E partition

vmdk3 = thick provisioned disk hosting F partition

.......

Also the multiple Data partitions would be configured as Independent + Persistent virtual disks due to the snapshots. My logic behind is that OS (C drive) is used for snapshots when testing a new software for example while Data partitions act as storage disks that need to keep most current files regardless of reverting to an older snapshot. BTW data partitions are for regular word, excel, pics and so on.

i also realize that i could have a single Data partition ex. E: with multiple shared folders but since each folder is for a different department it might cause more trouble when growing the space in the future. Large vmdk might take more time to expand. Again not sure.

thank you

Hi Team,

Need your help here to fix the increase in pool Utilization. Usually we use to run the un-map commands.

From past 1 month, we are temporarily running unmap command to fix the or bring down the pool utilization from storage end.

Unable to unmount a datastore

I need to remove|delete a datastore ("dsarchiv") from the ESXi 6.5, but I keep getting errors saying:

(vCenter)

The "Unmount VMFS volume" operation failed for the entity with the following error message.

(it's German for: "resource is in use. One or more VMs are registered on it")

(directly on host)

Failed - The resource 'dsarchiv' is in use.

I've tried everything I could find on Google, including lsof-ing, ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation setting (which previouls did point to the datastore in question, but now I switched it to point to another one). The datastore is empty, is just has few files (.fbb.sf  .fdc.sf  .pb2.sf  .pbc.sf  .sbc.sf .vh.sf) and one folder (.sdd.sf ). Any idea what's the reason for not being able to unmount?

What would happen if I simply destroy the array in RAID-controller while ESXi is running, would there be any consequences?

NFS Storage

Hello Experts,

Could you please help me to find out if there will be any impact of installing the VAAI NFS plugin onto the ESXI hosts. Is there any best practices to be followed in case I need to do this on all ESXI hosts in the environment.

Many thanks in advance.

Cheers

Not detecting more than 3 hosts in my shared datastore.

Hi,

I have assigned a LUN of 2TB shared across 4 hosts, i have added all four through ISCSI.
Now when i create a datastore in vcenter, i can only see 3 hosts are getting detected always.

IS there any limitations for vCenter regarding shared datastore?

vsantraces folder in datastore

I'm looking to clear up some under utilized datastores, but I am now seeing a vsantraces folder. Is there something that needs to be reconfigured before deleting this datastore? I unfortunately did not set up VSAN, is there a location I can check to see the configuration of VSAN if it has been implemented by another administrator?

Thanks!

Unable to set path state.  Error was: Unable to change path state, the path is marked as 'busy' by the VMkernel.

Heres the situation:

600gb vdisk

I added a volume to LUN0, Set the paths to default in the san.
I realized i didn't like the size and  removed the volume.
      Split vdisk into two volumes.

500gb and  99gb Volumes

Created volumes for both and set them to LUN 0.
The 1st disk, created and mapped.  2nd disk wouldn't path because LUN 0 was already taking (stupid me put it on the same LUN 0)

This is when the ESX alerts come.

I tried to deactive these luns but get

Update:  I have since added the 500gb and 99gb to LUN 3 and LUN 4 with no problems.   LUN 0 is still being seen by ESX when i don't have these anymore.  How can i remove these without interupting my production enviroment.

HELP NEEDED PLEASE ?

I have a windows VM which needs to be connected to a load of mapped RAW luns. These LUNs (symmetrix storage btw) have all been presented via their esx host and have been confirmed by the SAN guys and myself. The issue I have now is how can i confirm what the "vml.xxx" label is for each mapped raw lun (I can't seem to scroll to the end and confirm what it is?!?!?). I need this infor so I can marry up what Dev ID is being presented to which LUN. The VM is powered on and needs to remain powered on as its prod. So my question is, is there a way to find out what the full title of the mapping file is please ???

Check the attachment below which shows the properties of a 'mapped raw lun' and its inability to scroll to end to copy the full mapping file name.

Many thanks in advance

Native Multipathing Plugin question and Storage Mode Active /Active , Active/passive discovery

$

Hi everyone.

Let say we have  a  NET APP Storage array with two Storage processors. These processors are configured as active active. Assume we have multiple paths between  ESXI and this storage array.

We want to implement multi path and we would like to  use NMP plug-in.

1) Do we have to tell ESXI that Storage array is using active active or it is something ESXI discovers automatically via communication with Storage array?

2) If  EXSI does not discover the Storage Mode  ( Active/Active or Active/Passive) on its won, does  Operator have to  tell ESXI via configuration what SATP to use  say active active?

Thanks and have a good weekend!!

VCA HA why do we use it over simpler HA/FT for VCA?

$

Hi everyone,

VCA  HA requires Witness VM, Cloned passive VM to be created to provide VCA redundancy.

But we can provide the same functionality using simple HA for VM hosting VCA. For example, we can define the criteria if VM/host hosting VCA , if VCA VM is not reachable, start  cloned VCA's VM on a different host.

Better yet, we can use Fault tolerance feature for VCA's VM.

In both these cases, only one VM will activated if VCA is down.

Keeping in view the above two features why does one want to use VCA HA that requires more resources such as Witness node , Clone Passive VM for VCA?

NFS storage won't connect over custom TCP/IP stack

$

I’m trying to build out a new vSphere 6 environment (DR site). All is going well except NFS storage. I have created a separate TCP/IP stack for NFS and associated the appropriate vmk port to it. I can reach the storage with the vmkping command.

vmkping ++netstack=NFS X.X.X.X –d –s 8972

When I try to mount the storage I get an error that the ESXi host could not reach the NFS server. I have double checked all settings and paths. I tried adding a static route from the ESXi host to the storage network but received an error stating that the route already existed under another stack (expected). The vmotion netstack operates without a problem and when I remove the vmk and add it back under the default TCP/IP stack, it mounts the storage successfully. Any ideas what I might be missing?

virtual machine port ID and port-groups

Hi everybody,

Let say we have a VM which is connected to vSW1 on ESXI,  using port-groups VM-1,  VM-2

Does vSW still assign single Virtual machine port ID to VM or it will assign two virtual machine ports IDS to VM because it is connected to vSW using two port-groups VM-1, VM-2?

Thanks and have a nice day!!

How to Achive One device One HBA to one Path

$

Hi All,

There is scenario where storage Admin messed up the configuration. They have presented 1500-1600 path which is more then our limit 1024. Now I can see few devices from 4,3,2,1 HBA's instead of all 4HBA's. It's very risky to change it from storage end.

Is there any way we can restrict one HBA to all devcie to via one path?(for example if I have 4 HBA and 100 devices then i want every devices should be coming on all 4 HBA's via means 400 path and 100 path per HBA no more).

Thanks
