set alarm for vcenter vm disk space

$

Hello Vmware Experts,

We have a vcenter server that has 3 hosts, each with 6 t0 10 vms, divided more or less

equally.

We have run out of disk space on the vcenter service itself - fills logs and files/logs

in places like "/storange/log/vmware/sso"

I have looked at setting alarms for vm disk storage, but i have only seen where I can

put an alarm on one (or more) of the vm's hosted on the three esxi hosts.

Is there any way using vCenter or the vCenter client to configure such an alarm for the

the top level server?

Can snmp traps be set on the the vm? or some other method. I was hoping to be able to use

the web client for the vCenter server to do this. I has vms' spread over 3 hosts, with three datastores.

Any suggestions on this?

Thanks,

Ollie G

Help:about the -a|--xcopy-use-array-values

$

In the "vSphere storage", it says that I can use "-a|--xcopy-use-array-values" to add a claimrule to let the ESXi host use storage array reported value to build the XCOPY command, here is my question, which is the value storage array should report?  is it the “MAXIMUM SEGMENT LENGTH” in SCSI protocol command 0x84  service action 0x03?

How do I config Xcopy`s length of ESXi?

$

0

I know 2 ways to config Xcopy`s length:

1. use esxcfg-advcfg -s 16384 /DataMover/MaxHWTransferSize ,  ESXi will send 16M Xcopy to storage array

2.  use esxcli storage core claimrule add -r 914 -t vendor -V XtremIO -M XtremApp -P VMW_VAAIP_T10 -c VAAI -a

to add a claimrule to let the ESXi use storage reported parameters to size the XCOPY segment.

Here is my question:

     1. what the "storage reported parameters" is?  is it the "MAXIMUM SEGMENT LENGTH" of RECEIVE_COPY_RESULTS(0x84) command in SCSI protocol?

     2. these two ways will override each other? for example, when I use the way number 1 ,then the way number 2 will not work.

Please if you know the question, you have my deepest gratitude.

Unable to expand datastore after adding disk to RAID-6 (Dell PERC H730P)

Hi,

I'll try to be as thorough as I can. The short story is that we added a disk to the RAID-6 array in our PowerEdge server. Dell helped me to expand the virtual disk, but we can't seem to grow the datastore.

The datastore as it exists right now is 2TB. The new disk adds a 500GB capacity making it 2.5TB (or 2513.25 GB as the Dell iDRAC shows it).

When you look at the partition map, it shows several partition, all of the "Unknown" type.

Screen Shot 2019-05-08 at 9.52.52 AM.png

So, this shows there is 500GB of free space on the VD. However, the datastore (obviously) shows a 2TB size.

Screen Shot 2019-05-08 at 9.54.02 AM.png

When we attempt to grow the datastore, we see the following:

Screen Shot 2019-05-08 at 9.58.28 AM.png

Initially, Dell told me we couldn't grow the datastore because the formatted type is MBR (msdos). That is true. However, this was not something we chose when creating the datastore and, further, I think I've come to understand the when datastores are under 2TB ESXi purposely formats as MBR but then converts to GPT when we grow the datastore beyond 2TB. (I may have misunderstood the KB article.)

https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2011/12/upgraded-vmfs-5-automatic-partition-format-change.html

The datastore is formatted VMFS-6. The ESXi version is 6.7 U1.

Can provide more if needed. Thanks.

Are you troubleshooting I/O errors of local disks ?
If your conclusion is "something obscure happens in the BIOS of the ESXi-host" then maybe this helps:

Understanding ATA Security » ADMIN Magazine
Symptoms may be:

hexdump -C /dev/disks/t10************:1 - fails immediatly with an I/O error

partedUtil getptbl /dev/disks/t10******************* fails

dd commands fail at once with I/O errors

Mystery Extra Paths

Hey Guys,

we have a cluster of 10 ESX hosts, all are zoned exactly the same and are presented the same datastores, and all are working fine.

on the off chance while browsing I've noticed that one server has 8 paths to each datastore (4 active and 4 standby).  all the other hosts just have the 4 active paths, I thought this very strange since all the configs are identical (or maybe they aren't and i can't spot the difference)

can anyone shed any light on what may be causing this ?

cheers.

VMware vSphere 6.0

I might be light on details, but I don't quite know where to start.  I'm a "SAN beginner", but have been handed a built system and expected to support it.

I have a NetApp SAN that presents it's LUNs to a VMware environment.  I noticed an existing datastore only shows two paths when I check "Datastores", "Datastore Details":

one.png

However, a new LUN that was already configured on the SAN and that I just configured in NetApp to present to the same ESXi hosts is showing 8 paths:

eight.png

I'm not quite sure where to start to figure out the difference.  Both LUNs are being presented to the same number of hosts.

Where can I start to figure out if this is a "problem"?

Datastore /File Access Issue

We are running Horizon 7.4 with Linked clones and all desktops have a persistent disk attached.  I am in need on one of those persistent disks and can't seem to get it.  When i try to view it thru the web client it just spins and spins then come back with a error that it waited too long (120 seconds).  I can go thru the CLI and see the file just fine but can not see them thru the gui.  Tried the regular web client and the HTML5 client with no luck.  I also tried to Import the persistent disk thru the view admin console and i can see every file but the one i need.  Any one have a clue what might be going on?  Sure would be nice to have that users disk back with info on it.  any help is appreciated.  Thanks

FC Storage Luns not seen on Vsphere host

Hi,

We are trying to setup a Eonstor ESDS S16F-R1840 in one of our training Labs.

Eonstor is connected to a Brocade FC Switch with both ports ok.

Vsphere 6.7 Host is connected to same switch.

Both are in same Zone Configuration

Vsphere host and HBA is fully ESX 6.7 supported.

on Eonstor:

There are 4 Logical Drives and 4 Luns configured

Host WWN of ESX Host is configured

On ESX host: Rescan of HBA and Datastore is done.

But no Storage is seen.

esxcli storage core path list  shows only local Luns

Tried to present old HPE EVA8000 Vdisks to ESX Host on same FC Fabric.

Presented - rescan - see new storage - new datastore - finished ok

Presenting EONStor to Windows 2016 Server with HyperV works instantly.

Tried the same with Vsphere 6.5, 6.0, 5.5 with no success.

HAs somebody any further ideas ?

VMDK file size

Command Line Assistance

I had an extremely bizarre issue happen yesterday that most or some will not even believe.  What I am looking to find out is an easier way to locate what datastore a certain VM would have been on my system.  We have about 17 Volumes and searching them one by one is very tedious.  Looking for a command that might search the entire infrastructure for teh where-a-bouts of that vm.  Here is what happened...

Doing maintenance on servers so i was migrating all VM's to other Hosts to clear it.  I finished the firt host then rebooted and all was good with that one.  Started to clear the second host by migrating servers over.  Grouped teh fist 4 server (what I normally do) and that went fine.  Grouped the next 4 to migrate and got an error on one of them and it happened to be my View Connection Server.  Looked at it and it got turned off for some reason.  Keep in mind that prior to the migration it was functioning just fine since i had 50 users connected to it.   When i tried to start the VM it said that it couldn't find the VMDK file.  When i went to edit settings it said the hard disk was 0 GB and had a location of another VMDK file that has been turned off for months.  I contacted support and the tech could not locate the folder name of the VM any where where i thought it should be.  I sent the logs to them but it may be a while until i hear something.

Also when i went back to the Template to try and recreate the server (that was used for all my View servers) i got teh error message that it couldn't find that VMDK file.  That folder is still there but it tells me that i do not have access...strange.

What i am doing now is trying to locate the Folder by cloning a bunch of snapshots one by one.  This is taking a while but was hoping there would be a cmd line that might search the entire storage.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

Microsoft Cluster over vMSC, RDM usage with 3PAR Peer Persistence

$

Hello

I'm testing next configuration :

Microsoft SQL CAB Cluster with RDM in physical compatibility mode with 3PAR Peer Persistence and VMware Metro storage cluster. I know that it's not an easy set up, but I could't find any official document either VMware or HP stating that it is not supported setup.

Problem is that RDM is seen with single path from windows guest OS and when you switch over remote copy group to DR storage, cluster disks are lost. I tweaked this registry setting Configuring Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO) Timers and after remote copy group swithover disk are remounted automatically but I was not able to achieve not to loose cluster disk.

Is there a way to make this configuration to work ?

Safe to reduce size of NFS volume in System Manager? My VSC plugin broke...

$

I am a few weeks away from upgrading to 9.3 and upgrading my VSC version. But I have to reduce two NFS datastores this weekend. In the past I have decreased space using the VSC plugin which worked flawlessly. Now that the VSC plugin broke, I dont want to spend time re-installing etc when I am going to have to do in a week anyway. Can I safely reduce the NFS vol in System Manager without breaking anything?

Hello,

I'm trying to setup a vmware-vvol datastore with Hpe 3PARs. All works properly if i don't setup replication, but as soon as i configure replication, moving or creating Volumes in these VVol datastore are impossible

The error displayed in vmware is : Failed to create directory test (Cannot Create File)

Mounting a local Datastore in a VM

$

Hi,

Two weeks ago I deleted a vmdk file from a local datastore in ESXi 6.7. Trying to find a solution to recover the file I found a product from Disk Internals where they say they have a very good ration of success in recovering deleted files.
I download the product to make a test. The product is installed on Windows (in my case, on a Windows VM). The problem is that in order to read the VMFS (that is mounted and in production) I have to also mount it on the VM as a raw disk. They sent me a procedure where using the vmkfstools I can create a RDM to the local datastore, and afterward adding that vmdk to the Windows VM I should have access to the raw VMFS file system.

The problem is that when I try to add the rdm file as an existing disk, it gives me an error that says "Incompatible Device Backing Specified for device '0'".

I think the procedure is very similar to adding a share disk for a MS Cluster, but in this case I would be sharing the physical disk between my VM and the ESXi where the VM is running on. For making the test I also tried to mount another LUN from a iSCSI storage that I have created just for testing before using the real local Datastore. In this last case I presented a new LUN and I created a Datastore on it. The same error appears in both cases, when I try to mount the RDM that points to the Local Datastore and the RDMthat points to the Datastore created on the iSCSI storage. So, I think the problem is not because I'm trying to add a RDM that is mount on the ESXi as local because the same error also occurs with the Datastore that is in the iSCSI storage.
Thinking about the problem could be because the Datastore I want to access from the VM is mounted on the ESXi, for testing purpose I unmounted the iSCSI Datastore from the ESXi, but again I got the same error message.
I tried to add the RDM to the VM using a second controller LSI Logical SAS, BusLogic. And I also tried to use the second controller configuring the bus share as physical and virtual. But I always receive the same error message.
Do you have any idea why I'm getting this error? Or perhaps, someone knows a workaround to mounting a production Datastore to recover the file. The main objective is to recover the deleted vmdk.

Thanks in advance.

Guido.

We are buldung a VMware Installation with 3-4 Hosts and around 20 VM that are running at the same time. We plan to use a NAS for Storage.

Hosts and Storage will be connected in a seperate 10G Ethernetnetwork

Do you have recommodations how much RAM the NAS Needs? The VM´s are only used for testing and Education Purposes, no Production.

I hope for some Guidance which Dimensions we Need for a stable System.

Maximum Size for D: drive with GPT

I have 14TB (RAID 5) datastore on vmware 6.7 running Windows 2012 R2.

C: Drive is 200G.

Currently my Drive D size is 10.6TB

I read somewhere that 10.6T is maximum you can go on single logical D drive GPT format.

Is this correct or can I extend this drive by another 1TB to 11.6T?

Thanks in advance.
